From the North Jersey Suburbs into a New York City Building

Going from a house in Morris or Passaic County to an apartment in New York City is two moves in one: a suburban pickup and a city delivery with building rules, elevators and tight streets. Planning both ends separately is the secret to a calm day.

Start with the city building

  • Ask management for allowed move days and hours. Many buildings only allow moves on weekdays.
  • Reserve the service elevator and ask if it needs pads.
  • Ask for the sample certificate of insurance (COI). Send it to us a week before and we send the certificate the building asks for.

Downsizing from a house

House furniture often does not fit an apartment. Measure the new rooms and the building’s doors and elevator, and decide what to sell, donate or keep in storage before the estimate. Fewer items means a smaller truck and a shorter day.

Getting into the city

A moving truck crosses by the George Washington Bridge or by tunnel. In the Lincoln Tunnel trucks may use the outer tubes but not the center tube, and the Holland Tunnel takes only two- and three-axle single-unit trucks (Port Authority Truckers Guide (rates effective Jan 4, 2026)). Port Authority tolls are collected when entering New York (Port Authority Truckers Guide (rates effective Jan 4, 2026)). Deliveries in Manhattan south of 60th Street enter the MTA’s Congestion Relief Zone, where tolls apply (MTA).

Roads trucks cannot use

The Henry Hudson Parkway, the FDR Drive and the Belt Parkway are among NYC roads closed to commercial vehicles (NYC DOT). That is why a truck’s route and timing differ from a car’s.

Licensed for New Jersey to New York

This move crosses a state line, so federal rules apply. A & A Alliance Moving Inc, a family business since 1999, holds U.S. DOT No. 967970 and MC-432549 for moves between states, plus NJPM 000930 and NYSDOT 34875. You can look up our record on the FMCSA website, and the federal guides Ready to Move? and Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move explain your rights on an interstate move.

After the move, New York gives new residents 30 days to exchange an out-of-state driver license (NY DMV).

Common questions

Can the moving truck use the Henry Hudson Parkway?

No. NYC DOT lists the Henry Hudson Parkway, the FDR Drive and the Belt Parkway among roads closed to commercial vehicles.

Are there tolls?

Port Authority tolls are collected when entering New York, and deliveries in Manhattan south of 60th Street enter the MTA Congestion Relief Zone, where tolls apply. Your written estimate tells you what is included.

New York gives new residents 30 days to exchange an out-of-state driver license.
