Helping a Parent Downsize: A Simple Moving Checklist

Updated October 10, 2026

Moving a parent from a family house into a smaller home is a big move even when the distance is short. We are a family business too, so we see these moves often in Morris County and across North Jersey. This checklist takes the stress down.

For seniors and their families: a simple downsizing checklist

1. Start early

Begin 6 to 8 weeks before the move. One room, one closet, one drawer at a time. Short sessions are easier on everyone than one long weekend.

2. Measure the new rooms

Write down the size of each new room. Bring the furniture that fits and that gets used every day. A favorite chair matters more than a full dining set.

3. Keep, give, donate

Make three piles. Ask family what they want first, then donate or sell the rest. Photos and papers are easier to sort with family around.

4. Keep the essentials close

Medicine, glasses, papers, chargers and family photos go in one bag that stays with your parent on moving day, not in the truck.

5. Not sure yet? Store it

Put the “maybe” pieces in storage until the new home is set up, then decide. Nothing has to be decided in a rush.

Moving a parent? Packing, moving and storage

Six weeks, step by step

  • Weeks 6 to 5: walk through the house together and agree on what moves to the new home.
  • Weeks 5 to 3: sort room by room into keep, give and donate; ask family to collect what they want.
  • Weeks 3 to 2: book the move and the free written estimate, and plan the new rooms with the measurements.
  • Week 1: pack the rest, set aside the essentials bag, and arrange storage for the maybe pieces.

Go at your parent’s pace. Short sessions, a clear plan for each week and a known moving date make the change easier for everyone.

On moving day, it often helps if one family member stays with your parent at the new home while another stays at the old one with the crew. That way someone is always there to answer questions and to say where things go.
