How to Pack Efficiently for Your Move

No moving project is the same as another—which is something we learned a long time ago at Pine Brook NJ Movers. Since 1996, we’ve been helping homeowners in New Jersey and New York make smooth and organized moves to new homes in the area and throughout the world. Our movers and packers are trained to customize each moving experience to fit the customer’s needs—which can vary considerably, depending on a huge variety of factors.

Although the services each customer may need will vary, everyone can benefit from a smoother packing process. If you’re searching for ways to make your next relocation a lot more efficient, these helpful guidelines on how to make your next packing experience a breeze.

Gather Packing Supplies

To pack up your home properly, assemble enough packing supplies to make each packing session easy and interruption-free. There’s nothing worse than having to pause your progress because you’ve run out of boxes, tape, or other packing materials.

Gathering plenty of packing supplies early on will also help you to spend far less money on them than at the last minute. Search 99 cent and dollar stores to find cheap, good-quality duct tape, sturdy boxes, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and other packing supplies. You can also stop by grocery stores, department stores, and other retail locations to ask for box donations. Often, businesses will have a surplus of box materials and will give these away for free.

Pack Strategically

Clearly, you’re not going to want to pack up all of your clothing a month in advance, or your kitchen utensils, pots, and pans two weeks ahead of your move. Think logically and start packing the things you use the least, first—which is likely to be spare bedrooms, spare bathrooms, a storage closet, the shed, and the garage.

As you get closer to moving day, you can start packing up the rooms you use the most. For most people, the kitchen, the bathroom, and the bedroom are the last rooms of the house to wrap up in the week before moving day.

Label Your Boxes

This may seem obvious, but it can be forgotten in the rush of things—especially in a last-minute move. Label the boxes you’re packing, either by writing down where they go on the side, color-coding them, or using another clear system that will help you know what’s inside. This is also important for your moving team when they’re unloading the heavy boxes inside the house. A label will help them to know where the box goes.

Have Your Movers Take Care of the Disassembly/Reassembly of Furniture

Moving heavy or complicated furniture can be a huge hassle that wastes a lot of time, but professional movers are trained to do it in an instant. If you’re in a rush, or just want to avoid this part of the moving process entirely, have your movers take care of this part for you. This also helps a lot when you’re having to unpack your items in your home. Your movers can make sure that your shelving, cabinets, and other storage type furniture are set up and ready to be filled with your belongings. In fact, this is usually included in a full-service move, so ask your moving company if they’ll take care of this for you.

Use Plastic Bags for Garments

This is an old trick, but worth mentioning. Use giant garbage bags as garment bags to quickly pack clothes on hangers. Make a hole at the bottom of the bag, and then slip the tops of the hangers through it. Pull the garbage bag down over the clothing and tie the tops of the hangers with a rubber band, and voila—your wardrobe is ready to move with you. This also makes it easier to fit more in the moving truck and hanging up your clothing in the new closet will be a cinch.

Get Rid of Whatever You Can

As you pack, make sure to use the opportunity to consider what you really want to take with you to your new home. If there’s anything you’d rather throw away, give away, sell, or donate, you can separate these items now. The less you take with you, the less you need to pack, move, unpack, and set up in your new house, so make sure to get rid of as much as you can.
